NICKEL
A trace element that can turn toxic...
Nickel is a trace elements that can be highly toxic. Nickel is a frequent component of many types of high quality steel and other industrial nickel alloys, but also of everyday objects like belt buckles, buttons, costume jewelry, coins, rechargeable batteries, glass and ceramics. Coca and tea contain relatively high levels of nickel. Inhaled by smokers as a component of tobacco, Nickel contributes to the dangers of lung cancer.
In the human body, nickel deposits are found in the ribs, brain, kidneys, liver and thyroid gland. Nickel, nickel alloy and many nickel compounds have been shown to cause skin irritations, which, with continued contact, can turn into the so-called nickel allergy of the skin, that can develop into dermatitis. The chronic toxicity of metallic, as well as ionic nickel is enormous, and should be considered a carcinogenic for humans.
Nickel is the most potent allergen of all trace elements. Up to 33% of women and 17% of men are allergic to nickel. Nickel can actually cause an allergy by sensitizing one to a metal that otherwise may not come in contact with humans. A sign of nickel allergy is the development of hot, red, itchy earlobes soon after putting on inexpensive earrings as posts are usually made of stainless steel containing nickel. This can also be true for gold-colored earwires. It is not uncommon to have your veins collapse due to a nickel allergy when blood is withdrawn for simple blood testing, making it difficult to 'find your vein" and cause repeated sticks.
Nickel is commonly used in dental work to make crowns, as a component of orthodontic braces and root-canal posts (12% of the stainless steel rod in a root canal post are nickel). Removable partial dentures have up to 30% nickel, and about 80% of the dental community use nickelbased alloys for porcelain, fused to metal crowns.
Nickel does not pass government allergy test standards (ADA 41) but it is allowed to sneak in as stainless steel.
Symptoms associated with nickel allergy are systemic and include eczema or dermatitis in the eyelids, groin, elbows and elsewhere; in addition to asthma from inhalation of the dust, autoimmune diseases such as lupus or arthritis, headaches and neckaches and mucus in the throat are often seen.
When nickel combines with organic compounds (one that contains carbon), carbonyl is formed. Nickel carbonyl is toxic and carcinogenic, especially to lung tissue. Conditions for its formation exist in motor vehicle exhaust where the gasoline contains nickel additives, and as pollutants from the incomplete burning of coal and petrochemicals. It's also found with cadmium in cigarette smoke and may in fact be partially responsible for cancer associated with smoking.
Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke may also further react with nickel in the mouth. Acute exposure to nickel carbonyl can cause symptoms that may be delayed for several hours after exposure. These symptoms include lung and brain edema. Nickel carbonyl is metabolized in the body to Ni+2, an ionic form of nickel and carbon monoxide, also an potent asphyxiant.
The immune system effects of nickel include decreased resistance to disease, decreased antibody formation and decreased phagocytosis, all resulting in infection and cancer.
Nickel may also enters your body via dietary or industrial means. It is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils (corn, peanut, cottonseed, margarine), stoneground grains (utilizing stainless steel in the grinding process). Industrial sources of contamination include fossil fuel emission, batteries, nickel platin, cosmetics, super- phosphate fertilizers, stainless still cookware, and frequent handling of coins.
Root canals are a major source of nickel poisoning. Problems are due to the presence of toxic and allergenic nickel in the stainless steel post. The presence of a nonliving body part (tooth shell), causes infection because of stagnant infectious fluid into the tubules of the teeth, as well as the chemicals that are used to clean and fill the interior of the tooth which includes formaldehyde and mercury. The effects of nickel can be that of an electrical charge due to the battery effect.
